a peso... for whatever it's worth
a peso.. for whatever its worth
No... this is not a post attacking today's economy, rather it is a blog that probes in on the value we attach to money as it parallels how we regard certain people... anyway just read on if you wish... or dare!!! haha
anyway, today I ate at a certain food stall in campus. Carefully choosing a viand, I had both taste and price in mind - I sought out for the best buy... I bought this meat viand priced at P25 a serving and a buko juice at P10.. I payed with a hundred and... do the math! i sufficed myself with the thought that it was the best buy I hoped to get, but after counting the change, I had second thoughts...
You see the cashier gave me a P50 bill and three P5 coins. I thought that had I not bought the juice I would've received a P50 bill a P20 and a P5 coin... true, its only a P10 difference and these days P10 is not that big a deal compared to 10 or 15 years ago, but the fact that that P10 meant the difference between a P20 bill and some coins, gave the impression that it was not the best buy I hoped to have...
With the thought of this, I am brought to a realization of how measly or how great we look at people even when the difference between measliness and greatness seem to be not that far - "immaterial" even.I mean try juxtaposing two images of let's say Anne Hathaway wearing designer clothes and an image of her wearing rags, all messed up and dirty, and tell me you still look at her the same way. you'd be lying if you say yes! (well, for the majority I guess.) It's weird that we think that way, and I myself plead guilty to commiting such at some instances. You have, I guess society to thank for that but more than ever, our individual selves to blame... for in each day that we walk this earth we become willing victims to societal influential prejudice...How it happens or how to remedy it, don't know... yet (hehehe) :)
